From Idea to Order: How I Design Custom Products That Work

Custom orders are at the heart of what I do at AMDMelbourne. While the finished product might be a bright acrylic name badge or bold business signage, the real magic happens in the process—one that’s built on collaboration and a deep understanding of each customer’s needs.

As a small business owner, I’ve learned that great design isn’t just about how something looks—it’s about how well it works for the person using it. That means taking a thoughtful, step-by-step approach to every order I receive.

Step 1: Understanding the Need

It all starts with a conversation. Whether through Etsy, Instagram DMs, or email, my goal is always to understand what the customer needs—not just what they want. Sometimes that’s a simple name badge with a job title; other times it’s a design that communicates brand identity, personality, or even humour.

I ask guiding questions, offer suggestions, and translate even the vaguest of ideas into something concrete. My job is part designer, part communicator, and part problem-solver!

Step 2: Translating Ideas into Design

Once I've nailed the brief, I begin the design process. I use tools like Adobe Illustrator and Canva to draft visuals, choose colours, and explore layout options. Every design choice—whether it’s font style, icon placement, or colour palette—is made with the end user in mind.

This part of the process is all about clarity. I communicate updates clearly, offer mock-ups when needed, and make sure the customer feels confident every step of the way.

Step 3: Production with Purpose

With design approved, I move into production—cutting, assembling, and finishing each piece by hand using high-quality materials. I source many of these from other small Australian businesses, because I believe good design starts with good values.

Every badge is checked for quality, durability, and accuracy before it's packaged and posted.

Step 4: Aftercare and Feedback

After an order is sent, the communication doesn’t stop. I love hearing back from clients—whether it's feedback, photos, or a simple thank you. These interactions help me improve my process, evolve my designs, and most importantly, stay connected with the people I create for.
